Ubuntu and VMware

The main reason for starting this blog was after I had installed the new Ubuntu 9.10 in the new VMware Fusion 3.0. Simply said I wanted to describe how satisfied I was with the new versions of these two and needed a place where I could express my feelings. My other blogs was more specialized for a specific subject such as Identity Management or Sun Java CAPS. I had lately been struggling to get Ubuntu 9.04 working in VMware 2.0.6, especially with VMware tools and the graphics adapter. It would always give an error and I would be stuck with 800×600 resolution. Now after installing these 2 new versions everything just works as expected and it also seems like performance is better as well.

Another hallelujah moment was when I more or less by accident started up Ubuntu 9.04 on my Asus Eee PC where the installation is setup to dual-boot between Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.04. The default was to start Windows XP but for some reason I did choose Ubuntu to start from the GRUB menu. I also had my mobile wireless modem Huawei E220 connected. I was really surprised when after logging in to Ubuntu it automatically discovered that I had a mobile wireless modem connected and asked me if I wanted to configure it. Then it only asked me about the mobile internet provider I had. As I had Ubuntu running with Swedish configuration then correctly only Swedish providers were given it the list. Just seconds and everything was just working. Truly amazing. It just took me seconds to set Ubuntu as the default in the GRUB Menu. Next was to upgrade to the new 9.10 and it also just worked like a charm. No problems at all. I must say that I like the new menus I 9.10 Remix more than in the previous version.
